1st Paramedics Asia 2019

Paramedics Asia 2019

We heartily welcome all the participants throughout the globe
to join us in this inaugural Paramedics Asia 2019

Malaysia is honored to welcome all to Paramedics Asia 2019, first of its kind designed specially for paramedics to share experiences, innovations and news or updates and also exchange ideas for the betterment of EMS worldwide.

Foreword

Dr Kwanhathai Darin Wong

On behalf of the organizing committee, I would like to extend my warmest welcome to all speakers and delegates participating in Paramedic Asia 2019.

It is an honour for me to have this opportunity to share some of my thoughts. For many of us involved in the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and working in the Pre hospital Care (PHC) arena, we are faced with the vast range and diversity of situations and challenges constantly in delivering equitable patient care on a daily basis.

It is demanding work that can often be strenuous both physically and mentally but it can also be an extremely rewarding experience when we see a victim on the brink of death brought back to life and priceless when they thank you for saving their lives. The impact of actions carried out by paramedics on communities reach out far and wide and paramedics really are the “unsung heroes” in many a community.

In line with our theme this year: “Building Capacity, Strengthening Cooperation”, we hope the program prepared will serve as a good platform for all to share their experiences and learn from each other. Let us all network and update ourselves on the latest in EMS as well as find practical solutions or innovative ways to improve and address the many challenges of our work.

Organizing this conference would not have been possible without the dedicated support of the entire organizing committee and so I sincerely thank them all. My gratitude and appreciation also goes to all the speakers, panelists, committed delegate paramedics and industry partners who have all contributed to make this conference a success.

Last but not least, wishing everyone a most fruitful conference and enjoyable stay here in Putrajaya!

Dr Kwanhathai Darin Wong

About 1st Paramedics Asia 2019

EMS is essentially having its own ecosystem in healthcare environment. Within the ecosystem of EMS, there are two groups of professionals that work synergistically but with differing context for continuous education needs.

What excites paramedic? The next breakthrough in medicine or sharing of experience in patient care scenarios? The more difficult the clinical scenario the more excitement it generates within the paramedic community.

Thus, the introduction of Paramedic Asia 2019. The guiding principles of the conference is not sharing of clinical breakthrough, however creating a psychologically safe platform for paramedics to share their experience, innovation and news on things that matter more to paramedics.

CASE PRESENTATION Overview

The main focus of the conference is to provide a platform for paramedics to exchange ideas and share their experiences from the pre hospital setting.  It can be of an interesting encounter during their pre hospital response(s) with some local innovation or unique techniques, or sharing of ideas and special methods that may be adapted elsewhere in the field of paramedicine.

This case presentation sessions will have the presenters from the allied health or paramedicine professionals sharing their experiences or ideas and the Medical Directors as expert panels to provide opinion pertaining to the practice of medicine and medical direction.  This form of forum will facilitate learning and allow the paramedicine professionals to be more actively involved in the conference.

Thus paramedics are encouraged to submit as many abstracts as they want to share their experiences and ideas. After review, the best few will chosen from each category to be presented in the case presentation sessions.  The rest will be automatically be eligible for the poster presentation.  All abstracts will also be submitted for publication in the Malaysian Journal of Emergency Medicine unless specified otherwise by the authors.

For those abstracts chosen for the case presentation sessions, the method of presentation is up to the creativity of the presenter.  It can be in the form of oral presentation, video presentation or any other creative way of delivering the messages across to the other paramedics, within the defined duration of time given.  The prerequisites are the presenter must be from the allied health or paramedicine professional and he /she must be present during the presentation. No doctor is allowed to present on behalf.

The birth of Paramedics Asia 2019

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is nothing new in medicine. Its presence has dated way back during the war era to provide emergency medical care to injured soldiers in the battlefield, to the current state of a more developed organization to cater for the community it served. In majority of the countries all around the world, this important service is being provided by the group of professionals called paramedics.

In Asia, the EMS organizations are at various stages of development in different countries. The acknowledgment of its presence was notable in their effort to improve survival of Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest victims through the Pan-Asian Resuscitation Outcomes Study (PAROS). This study has brought together EMS organizations from various countries in Asia that since has grown stronger and larger into addressing issues pertaining to EMS. Eventually with commitment and perseverance, this has finally led to the formation of Asian Association of Emergency Medical Services (AAEMS), an organized society to be the advocate for the EMS in Asia.

In 2012, the society has successfully organized its first conference namely EMS Asia in Penang, Malaysia. Since then the conference was held every 2 yearly in various countries in Asia and next will be held in Tokyo, Japan in year 2020. This has also mark the involvement of AAEMS in many international organization especially related to EMS.

And this year Malaysia is honored to present itself again by hosting Paramedics Asia 2019, another and first of its kind forum or platform specially for all paramedics to share their experiences, innovations and news or updates in EMS. It will be a forum where paramedics and Medical Directors can meet, network and exchange ideas for the betterment of EMS. Hence, the birth of Paramedic Asia 2019.
